Last June I asked from the front seat
“How about we fly a Pride Flag?”

I could feel the relief without even looking.

Everywhere around town, rainbow flags
waving from
the porches saying
We don’t know you, but we see you. We are with you.
I was grateful for those gentle eyes,
yearning to rest my eyes that way
on other people’s children.

No bumper stickers
no sloganed t-shirts
no lawn signs
no social media memes.

If you want to know what I think,
well,
you’re just going to have to ask me.

But in June I want to tell you
before you ever ask.
