Life in Five Senses: How Exploring the Senses Got Me Out of My Head and Into the World

by Gretchen Rubin

It is surprising that I have managed to resist Gretchen Rubin for this long, as she is something of a Self-Help Goddess and I am a sucker for that genre. I picked out this title in audiobook and listened to it because lately I have been doing a lot of thinking and reading about embodiment — what it means to be walking through this world and experiencing it from within a human body. Like Rubin, sometimes I find myself a little too stuck inside my own head, and then I snap out of it only to find that I haven’t been seeing or hearing or sensing anything in my surroundings. I am a very habitual person, so if I am able to take away from this book a few ideas that enable me to live more fully inside my body on a daily basis, it will have been well worth the time.
