I’ve read several of Colson Whitehead’s novels, and this one was recommended by a friend who suggested the audiobook edition. I tend to read only non-fiction in audio, but maybe I would have enjoyed the audio version of this one better than I did the print version. I did love the setting of Harlem in the early 1960s, and the main character Ray Carney is a fascination character study of a guy just trying to make a living and support his family while weaving back and forth across his own take on morality and legality. The book is chock full of great characters who both support and frustrate Ray as he runs both a legit furniture store and a backroom fencing operation.
