I have run into Maggie Smith’s poetry in a couple of anthologies and she has become kind of a mentor poet to me. After I picked up her writing guide called Dear Writer, I sought her out on the poetry shelves of the library. Her poems are plain spoken but also rather mystical and deep, often about her life as a mother. I am fascinated by what she does with poetic form, and will use her as a role model in my own writing. Just a couple of her poems at bedtime before my fiction read has been a beautiful little winter interlude.
