I was at the library looking for a John Boyne title that wasn’t on the shelf when my eyes drifted to the left and saw this title by William Boyle. “Awwww,” I thought, “sounds kind of girly but I’ll take a look.” Whoa! Goodreads classifies it as “screwball noir,” and I can’t think of a better description.
I guess you could say it is a “chick book,” but the “chicks” are a mob widow from the Bronx, her estranged daughter (also in love with a mob guy), her teenage granddaughter whom she hardly knows but decides to rescue, a couple of elderly retired porn stars, and an enforcer who goes around killing people with a hammer. So, there’s lots of blood, but really — it’s hilarious. Not my normal genre, but I highly recommend!
